UK Petrol and Diesel Car Ban from 2030
An outright ban on selling purely petrol or diesel cars past 2030 will remain in place, reflecting a key commitment set out in Labour’s election manifesto. This policy is designed to accelerate the transition to cleaner transport, cut carbon emissions and support investment in low‑emission vehicle technology across the UK.
Alongside the ban, the government is consulting on changes that could give manufacturers greater flexibility in how they meet overall emissions targets. Under the proposals, car makers may be allowed to sell a higher proportion of hybrid vehicles within the UK’s total new car sales, provided they still comply with the long‑term goal of phasing out pure internal combustion engine models.
These potential adjustments aim to balance environmental ambition with consumer choice and industry readiness, while keeping the 2030 deadline for ending sales of new petrol and diesel‑only cars firmly in place.
