textiles are wasted by the ton every year, filling landfills, polluting ecosystems, and squandering valuable resources that could be reused, recycled, or transformed into new products. From discarded clothing and household fabrics to unsold inventory from the fashion industry, most of these materials end up as waste after only a short period of use. This linear “take–make–dispose” model contributes to climate change, microplastic pollution in oceans and rivers, and the unnecessary extraction of raw materials such as cotton, water, and oil-based fibers. By extending the life of textiles through repair, resale, upcycling, and fiber-to-fiber recycling, it becomes possible to reduce environmental impact, support a more circular economy, and unlock new opportunities for innovative, sustainable products.
